One of the most important things for any bird catchers is their upland hunting dogs. The reason is that these kinds of dogs are not just practical to have on the field; they can also be your buddy in this type of endeavor. They comprehend your need to hunt birds and they have all the needed skills that can help you do so. Here are several of the things that you may want to understand about upland hunting dogs.

Upland hunting dogs do have the necessary skills that can assist any bird catcher at any given time of the day. However, these skills have to be polished with the help of various training techniques for hunting dogs which will even make them an ideal dog for bird catching. You will not have many issues with this one though as those characteristics that are useful for bird catching are already natural in these dogs.

There are three kinds of upland hunting dogs and these are the pointing dogs, the retrievers, and the flushing dogs.

The pointing dogs are very practical for precisely tracking the bird that you have just brought down. They have a great sense of smell which is the trait that enables them to lead you towards the bird you just hunted down. Retrievers on the other hand know how to get back your game without destroying its overall appearance. They know how to find a way with their jaws around the game.

The last kind, which is the flushing dogs, has the ability to locate the game and make it come out of its hiding place. This will then provide the bird hunter enough visibility to shoot the game. This is why there are some catchers who prefer to train their retriever or pointing dogs to become flushing dogs.

Not all breed can be turned into upland hunting dogs. Among the more popular breeds for bird hunting are the golden retriever, Labrador retriever, pointer, and the cocker spaniel.
